Georgia Austin, Zurich Insurance

A levels I Assistant Underwriting Service Specialist

What were you doing before this role?

I was at sixth form studying A levels. I studied Psychology, Sociology and Business Studies.

Why did you decide not to go to university?

I enjoyed my time in sixth form. However I had decided that full-time further education was not for me. I decided to look for an apprenticeship, which would give me the opportunity to kick start my career, develop valuable skills and gain real knowledge whilst studying for recognised qualifications.

What do you do in your typical working day?

  • I provide underwriting support to all underwriting teams
  • I process all transactions such as renewals, submissions and endorsements
  • I set up new targets and prospects in the pipeline process and also quotes
  • I send out various reports for the team to work from and check sanctions which is a regulatory requirement
  • I also attend various meetings and liaise with other departments

How does your role fit into the wider insurance picture?

My role is to process and book all transactions and this ensures the issuance process runs smoothly from start to finish.  I also provide support to underwriters and clients.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My current role involves daily contact with many different departments within Zurich and no two days are ever the same. This means I have to prioritise my workload to meet deadlines and enables me to build strong inter-departmental relationships.  I enjoy the busy work environment and the opportunity to learn from different business areas.

Most challenging part of your role?

The most challenging part of my role is balancing work and studying for my professional qualifications.

What do you need to be successful in your role?

To be successful within my role you need to be a good team worker, personable and with the ability and willingness to learn.

Have you taken any professional qualifications?

Yes I have completed my CII Certificate in Insurance (Cert CII).

What have been your career highlights so far?

One of my career highlights was being part of the Zurich Cares London Committee. I get to take part in fundraising and decisions about which charity the grant goes to.

What are the main benefits of working in the profession?

One of the main befits of working in this profession is the stability of your career. The demand for insurance professionals is at an all-time high and there are plenty of opportunities.  Another benefit is that there are always opportunities to meet new people and you get the chance to work with people from various departments eg claims, actuaries.

Why did you choose a career in insurance?

Whilst at sixth form I knew I wanted to go into the financial services sector but I wasn’t sure on which particular part. When I saw the Zurich apprenticeship advertised at my sixth form I applied as it was a great opportunity.  « Back to case studies
