Cornish Mutual


About us

Cornish Mutual is a general insurer and is unique in that it only insures people based in a specific geographical region (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset). Founded by a group of farmers in 1903, we now offer a wide range of insurance to people, businesses and farms based in the South West. Our head office is in Truro, Cornwall and we're proud of our 110-year history.

We're a mutual

As our name suggests we are also a mutual organisation. This means that we are owned by our Members (customers) not shareholders, so instead of focusing on paying a dividend to shareholders, we work for the benefit of our Members. Everyone at Cornish Mutual strives to provide Members with an excellent service and puts their needs at the heart of everything they do by working in an honest, open and customer-centred manner. For instance, we deal with claims in a fair and straightforward way so we can get our Members back on their feet as quickly as possible.

Our values

Our mutuality gives us a principled platform from which we do business. We believe our values are what make us so different from other insurers. We pride ourselves on the relationships we build with Members, some of whom have insured with us for generations. We take time to visit our Members' businesses to understand their insurance requirements and our knowledge of South West life plays a vital part in that.

What it means to be part of Cornish Mutual

If you'd like to join us you might be interested in how we measure performance. Our appraisal system is based on behaviours so, for instance, we don't work on commission because we want to make sure there is no conflict in providing best advice to our Members. Instead, objectives focus on demonstrating the three key behaviours that are central to Cornish Mutual success:

  • Developing self and others - we expect people to grow in their role and help their colleagues do the same
  • Proud to be Cornish Mutual - we want our people to have a positive impact on their workplace
  • Enhancing our reputation - we like people who can be great advocates for the company and a shining example to the outside world of who we are.

We invest in our people and provide training and support to everyone in the company. In both 2012 and 2013 we won the UK Customer Service Training Programme of the Year for our six-week induction programme. Regardless of the job role they are going into, everyone does the same initial training. This enables every new starter to get a feel for all the different parts of the company and understand our values. The induction finishes with everyone taking live calls from Members. With over 80% of the organisation taking part in training new starters, we believe this is what makes it so special.
