Piping hot

In 2006 it was estimated that the United States had 793,285 km of pipelines delivering petroleum products and natural gas. Pipelines can be the target of vandalism, sabotage, or even terrorist attacks. In war, pipelines are often the target of military attacks, as destruction of pipelines can seriously disrupt enemy logistics.

In 2008 it was reported that a ruptured gas pipeline in Australia was among the catastrophes that halved profits at Lloyd's of London in the first six months, demonstrating the huge financial risk involved in insuring pipelines.
