Markel - apprentice, intern or grad - you choose

Markel is a US-owned risk and insurance business that also has offices in the City of London's Walkie Talkie building on Fenchurch Street. It has 10,000 staff around the world but still has a family feel to the business.

Right now, it's offering you the chance to join its graduate, apprenticeship and internships programmes. So, whether you've just left school, or are in your penultimate or final year at uni, there's a top opportunity for you.

Markel graduate programme

The Markel International graduate programme offers you a chance to really get to know the business through an 18-month rotational programme.  You will spend time with three teams across the business to help you develop the skills and knowledge it takes to be successful.  At the end of the programme, subject to performance and business requirements, you may be offered a permanent position.  

Here are the other key features:


  • Support towards completing your CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII)
  • Knowledge and business skills development in the form of experiences, training and study
  • Competitive salary and benefits

You will need:


  • A minimum 2:2 degree class (obtained or predicted) in any discipline
  • A minimum of 3 A levels, grade A-C (or equivalent)
  • To be eligible to work in the UK and be able to provide proof of your right to work. Markel doesn't support visa applications. 

Markel summer internship programme

A summer internship is a great way to experience what it’s like to work for an international organisation and gain valuable insight before deciding on your long-term career aspirations. Markel offers internships within these areas: 


  • Specialty & Financial Lines
  • Marine, Energy and Property
  • Reinsurance
  • Strategy & Development
  • Claims
  • Legal & Regulation
  • Marketing
  • Operations
  • HR.

Here are the key features:


  • 8-week paid summer internship, with hands-on work experience
  • Participation in a short project to support your ongoing development
  • A chance to secure a place on the graduate programme the following year

You will need:


  • To be in your penultimate year of university study
  • To be on track for a minimum of a 2:2 degree class in any discipline
  • A minimum of 3 A levels, grade A-C (or equivalent)
  • To be eligible to work in the UK and be able to provide proof of your right to work. Markel cannot support visa applications 

Actuarial internship programme 


Are you considering a career as an actuary?

Here's a great opportunity for motivated undergraduates to spend 13 months working in an actuarial team. 


Here are the key features:


  • 13-month internship within an actuarial team
  • Participation in a short project to support your ongoing development
  • Competitive salary and benefits

You will need:


  • To be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2 degree class 
  • Three A level passes at grades C or above (or equivalent)
  • Maths and English Language GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • A strong numerical background
  • To be computer literate with some Microsoft Excel skills
  • To be eligible to work in the UK and be able to provide proof of your right to work. Markel cannot support visa applications. 

Insurance apprenticeship

The Markel International apprenticeship programme lasts 15 months and kick starts your career in insurance.


Including a CII professional qualification, the apprenticeship also includes business and technical skills training. At the end of the programme, subject to performance and business requirements, you may be offered a permanent role Markel International.  

You will need:


  • A minimum of 3 A levels, grade A-C (or equivalent)
  • Grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • To be eligible to work in the UK and be able to provide proof of your right to work. Markel cannot support visa applications.
