A Which? report has revealed that millions of music fans who download tracks don't have the right insurance coverage.

There should be a surge in customers looking to upgrade their policy, after The Guardian revealed that some insurers offer up to £2,500 worth of cover in their policies.

Peter Vicary Smith, chief executive of Which? said "People who buy a lot of digital music should double-check their home insurance policy to make sure downloads are covered. If they're not, we'd recommend switching to a provider that has entered the digital age."

However, Which? also advised that it might not be necessary if a music fan backs up the files with an external hard drive, which is the safest way to recover digital files.

It remains a complex issue for insurers, in the event that someone would have their files stolen, explained Adrian Webb, a spokesman for insurance company esure. He said: "If someone has been cleared out and has clearly lost all trace of the digital tracks, ie computers, iPods and discs all stolen, then we would ask for a print-out of their iTunes purchase history and would look to reimburse the cost of one-time download tracks/data that they have lost forever."
