Eldon's training programme makes the finals

Bromley College

Eldon Insurance Services, one of our long-standing Discover Risk supporters based in the North East, has reached the finals of the Insurance Times Training Programme of the Year Award.

It was shortlisted in the Training Programme of the Year category for the work it has done on its training academies, launched in summer 2010.

Eldon is a young and innovative company with fresh ideas of handling claims and wanted to attract like-minded people with no preconceived ideas of how claims should be handled. It wanted to give young people who did not want to go into higher education the chance to pursue a career in the risk profession.

Supported by coaches, business experts and a Team Manager, Eldon's academy is ring-fenced from the other claims teams to create a safe learning environment. The team control what work is handled within this area, depending on the learning ability of the trainees. This means that trainees learn at their own pace and in their own style without feeling any pressure.

Should a trainee feel that they have reached their ceiling it may be that they are released from the academy and placed in a team that suits their ability, whilst the remaining trainees may go on to be trained in more complex areas. Throughout the academy there are incentives and all trainees then 'graduate' from the programme into a team that matches their abilities.

As Brian Stonehouse, Eldon's Learning and Development Manager explained, "Eldon's academies create a group of motivated staff who have a good basic knowledge of insurance and claims handling that the company can build on. It has given us the opportunity to enable other more established staff to move on within Eldon as we have people with confidence to fill their roles. People who are still eager to learn more and who are already embracing our culture and behaviours.

"We are extremely proud of our achievements and to be shortlisted as a finalist and look forward to the second part of the judging process in October."
