London 2012 - let the games begin!

London 2012 - let the games begin!

Today marks the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Since it was announced seven years ago that London would host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games, the city has been preparing itself to welcome athletes and spectators from around the world.

For the next six weeks all eyes will be on London and today an estimated 4 billion people will be tuning in to watch the opening ceremony which starts at 9pm BST.

The estimated airtime value for all four ceremonies (that's the opening ceremony, closing ceremony, team welcome ceremonies, and victory ceremonies) is expected to be somewhere between a whopping £2billion and £5billion.

15, 000 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 90 will work across the four ceremonies, some of whom, according to the London 2012 organising committee, will include people who watched the games live the last time it was hosted in London, in 1948.

For the opening ceremony there are 15,000 square metres of staging (equivalent to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools), a flying system that can lift 25 tonnes - that's the same as five elephants - and 12,956 props - over 100 times more than used in a West End musical.

Do you have tickets for the opening ceremony?  Will you be watching it at home?  Perhaps you have tickets for some of the games?  Share your Olympic stories and favourite photos with us in the box below, and if you want to find out who the official insurance and baking provider is for the 2012 Olympic Games click here.
