Benefits of professional exams

Working in risk and taking CII exams in particular, means that you are acknowledged and recognised as a professional.  I achieved the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance, a requirement of the CMT graduate scheme at Allianz. CII offers continuous learning opportunities and requires its members to log their ongoing learning and development as an insurance professional.

The bigger picture

Operations Management is all about managing people and processes effectively to deliver for our customers both internally and externally. Successful management of our resources directly contributes to the bottom line.

Where risk has taken me

I was recruited onto the Corporate Management Graduate Trainee scheme (CMT) in September 2007, following my graduation in Law and Management Studies from Leeds University. The scheme is made up of four placements of different lengths, one in each of the key business areas.  I undertook a placement working in a Motor Fleet New Business Team as an Assistant Underwriter with additional responsibility for renewals, an Operational placement within the Schemes Call Centre and one working in a Claims branch, assisting the management team on an operational level and heading up departmental projects.

I then came off the CMT programme and secured a secondment opportunity as Customer Services Controller ? managing a contact centre operation of call taking and correspondence teams for a 12 month period. Stepping into a managerial role was a huge learning curve and gave me the experience to move into a Resource and Training Coordinator role for our Retail division.  Here I had responsibility for our Retail Management graduate programme and for our cross-divisional management development programme, Routes to Success. 

I subsequently undertook a short secondment as a manager of a small business change team before moving into my present role as Regional Operations Manager for our Commercial division in the South East.
